Just past Mto wa Mbu you leave the tarmac, and the drive continues on adventurous slopes along the East African Rift Valley, past Maasai villages and Ol Doinyo Lengai, the holy mountain of the Maasai. Lake Natron is home to a remarkable variety of birds — in particular about 2.5 million lesser flamingos, for whom the lake is a regular breeding ground.
The saline water supports algae and bacteria that colour it red-brown to purple-violet, and the surroundings are one of Africa’s most beautiful unspoilt regions. A short hike leads to nearby waterfalls — a true oasis for a swim.
Short grass and animals gathered near water — the easiest game viewing.
Brief showers, green plains and fewer visitors.
Lush landscapes, newborn animals and active predators.
Quiet and green; some roads are muddier.
