This unique, awesome trip takes you on a path of breathtaking scenery and game watching. You visit all the major northern national parks and the mountain of God, and get to see all of the Big Five. In six days you explore the best of Tanzania.
After a briefing and a two-hour drive you arrive at Tarangire. Giant baobab trees, bush savannah and seasonal marshes characterise this nature reserve. Tarangire is considered one of the best places to see elephants up close, and the park is also home to buffaloes, zebras and wildebeests, followed by predators such as lions; leopards are seen occasionally. From the open roof of your safari vehicle you take in the landscape and watch the animals. Evening transfer to the lodge.
Just past Mto wa Mbu you leave the tarmac road, and the drive continues along adventurous slopes of the East African Rift Valley, past Maasai villages and Ol Doinyo Lengai, the holy mountain of the Maasai. Lake Natron is home to a remarkable variety of birds — in particular about 2.5 million lesser flamingos, for whom the lake is a regular breeding ground. You hike to the lake and visit the nearby waterfalls, a true oasis where you can swim.
Track the annual migration of wildebeest and zebra. Spot predators — lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas — and their prey: buffaloes, impalas and kongoni, plus elephants and giraffes. You may even witness a hunt, with flat-topped acacias silhouetted against the setting sun.
A second day on the Serengeti plains, with time to wait at the best sightings and enjoy the classic African safari images the park is famous for.
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most beautiful natural sights in Africa. Morning mist rolls over the steep crater walls, and the floor shelters lions and hyenas, elephants and black rhinos, flamingos and golden jackals, with forests, hippo pools, a salt pan and hyena dens.
The park is dominated by the lake of the same name, which attracts large colonies of water birds — particularly impressive are the pink flamingos, cormorants, pelicans and storks. About 400 bird species live in the park. Lake Manyara is also famous for its tree-climbing lions, and you can see elephants, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes and hippos. At noon you head back towards Arusha/JRO.
