    Mount Kilimanjaro rises to the north-west of Mkomazi National Park, with the Pare and Usambara Mountains to the south; together with Kenya's Tsavo it forms a major protected ecosystem. The park is home to a black rhino sanctuary and an African wild dog breeding programme, as well as giraffe, eland, hartebeest, zebra, buffalo, elephant and gerenuk. Bird spotting is excellent, with more than 450 species recorded.
