This four-day wildest Tanzania safari includes Tarangire National Park, Lake Natron, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, designed to offer you a short but intense Northern Circuit experience. It is for a shorter, time-constrained trip of four days and three nights, and you will experience the excitement of game viewing in four of the most spectacular parks in Tanzania.
Just past Mto wa Mbu you leave the tarmac road, and the drive continues along adventurous slopes of the East African Rift Valley, past Maasai villages and Ol Doinyo Lengai, the holy mountain of the Maasai. Lake Natron is home to a remarkable variety of birds — in particular about 2.5 million lesser flamingos, for whom the lake is a regular breeding ground. You hike to the lake and visit the nearby waterfalls, a true oasis where you can swim. The saline water supports algae and bacteria that colour it red-brown to purple-violet, and the surroundings are one of Africa's most beautiful unspoilt regions.
The endless Serengeti plains are the heart of a vast ecosystem with a unique, species-rich animal world. Each year the great migration involves over 1.4 million wildebeest, nearly 300,000 Thomson's gazelles, about 200,000 zebras and several thousand topis. With about 3 million larger mammals — including some 3,000 lions, 300 cheetahs and an estimated 400–700 leopards — the Serengeti is the richest wildlife park in the world.
A half-day safari in the crater. You descend over 600 metres into the crater to view wildlife. Supported by a year-round supply of water and fodder, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area supports a vast variety of animals, including herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo and giant African elephants. The dense predator population includes lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the elusive leopard. You also visit Lake Magadi, a large but shallow alkaline lake in the south-western corner, home to flamingos, hippos and water birds. After lunch you climb out and head to your lodge for the night.
Giant baobab trees, bush savannah and seasonal marshes characterise this nature reserve. Tarangire is considered one of the best places to see elephants up close, and the park is also home to buffaloes, zebras and wildebeests, followed by predators such as lions; leopards are seen occasionally. From the open roof of your safari vehicle you take in the landscape and watch the animals. After the game drive you head to Arusha/JRO.
