Overview
The crater has a diameter of 17 to 21 kilometres and is home to almost the whole biodiversity of the East African savannah. Between 15,000 and 25,000 animals live here depending on the season, and it has the densest concentration of predators in Africa, with more than 100 lions. Only giraffes and a few other species, for which the crater walls are too steep, are missing.
Morning mist rolls over the rim as you descend some 600 metres to the crater floor, with its forests, hippo pools, the salt pan of Lake Magadi and hyena dens.
