Overview
The park runs along the line of the Tarangire River and is made up of low hills on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, with acacia woodland, giant African baobab trees and large swamps in the south. River and swamps act like a magnet for wild animals during the dry season, and Tarangire is reputed to hold some of the largest elephant herds in Africa.
Tarangire is also home to one of Tanzania’s healthiest lion populations, plus greater kudu, fringe-eared oryx and ashy starlings.
