Mount Kilimanjaro rises to the north-west of Mkomazi, with the Pare and Usambara Mountains to the south; together with Kenya’s Tsavo it forms a major protected ecosystem. The park runs a black rhino sanctuary and an African wild dog breeding programme.
Visitors also meet giraffe, eland, hartebeest, zebra, buffalo, elephant and gerenuk, and bird spotting is excellent, with more than 450 species recorded.
