The second most popular and one of the most beautiful routes up the mountain. Also known as the Whisky Route, this trail is both longer and slightly more challenging than the Marangu Route. Accommodation is in tents only. About 80% of hikers reach Africa’s summit.
A rainforest trek on a winding trail up a ridge. The lower sections may be muddy and slippery — gaiters and trekking poles are recommended.
Leave the rainforest and climb through a small valley and up a steep, rocky ridge covered in heather, then turn west into a river gorge to the Shira campsite.
Climb east along a ridge past the Kibo junction, then south-east to the Lava Tower (“Shark's Tooth”) before descending to Barranco. A critical acclimatisation day.
A steep climb up the Barranco Wall, through the Karanga Valley and on to Barafu, completing the Southern Circuit with views of both Mawenzi and Kibo.
A pre-dawn ascent through heavy scree to Stella Point, sunrise views, then the snowy final climb to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Rapid descent to Mweka Camp for the night.
Descend through the forest to Mweka Park Gate — lower down it may be wet and muddy — and receive your summit certificate.
