Based on the rooftop of Africa, this is where our lighthouse shines from and where the adventure begins. The benchmark and highlight of the journey stems from Uhuru Peak and stretches to the endless plains of the Serengeti. Our five-day Tanzania safari offers wildlife galore that is both exceptional and interesting. On this short but intense trip you experience the excitement of cultural tours coupled with an African wildlife safari in the most spectacular parks in Tanzania.
The herds move in a fairly predictable annual pattern. They migrate throughout the year, constantly seeking fresh grazing and water.
Just past Mto wa Mbu you leave the tarmac road, and the drive continues along adventurous slopes of the East African Rift Valley, past Maasai villages and Ol Doinyo Lengai, the holy mountain of the Maasai. Lake Natron is home to a remarkable variety of birds — in particular about 2.5 million lesser flamingos, for whom the lake is a regular breeding ground. You hike to the lake and visit the nearby waterfalls, a true oasis where you can swim.
After an early breakfast you head for the northern Serengeti, climbing the Rift Valley on adventurous slopes into the wide plains. The Serengeti is the heart of a vast ecosystem whose species-rich animal world is unique. Each year the great migration involves over 1.4 million wildebeest, almost 300,000 Thomson's gazelles and about 200,000 zebras. With about 3 million larger mammals, the Serengeti is the national park with the richest wildlife in the world.
The entire day is dedicated to game viewing in the Serengeti. The areas you visit depend on where the migrating herds are. Predators usually follow closely behind the trekking animals and include lions, leopards (in the acacia trees) and cheetahs. During the short rains of November and December the herds move from the hills in the north to the plains in the south.
Today's game drive takes you on adventurous roads about 600 metres down into the crater. The crater has a diameter of 17 to 21 kilometres and is home to many animals — nearly all the biodiversity of the East African savannah is gathered here. Only giraffes and a few other species, for which the rock walls are too steep, do not live in the crater.
The park runs along the Tarangire River and is made up of low hills on the floor of the Great Rift Valley. Its vegetation is mainly acacia woodland and giant African baobab trees, with large swamps in the south. River and swamps act like a magnet for wild animals during the dry season, and Tarangire is reputed to hold some of the largest elephant herds in Africa.
