In seven days you will visit all of northern Tanzania’s major safari national parks. There is plenty of time for extensive game viewing in the Serengeti, with many chances for great photos — and you shape each day together with your guide.
Just past Mto wa Mbu you leave the tarmac road, and the drive continues along adventurous slopes of the East African Rift Valley, past Maasai villages and Ol Doinyo Lengai, the holy mountain of the Maasai. Lake Natron is home to a remarkable variety of birds — in particular about 2.5 million lesser flamingos, for whom the lake is a regular breeding ground. You hike to the lake and visit the nearby waterfalls, a true oasis where you can swim.
Climb the Rift Valley escarpment into the Serengeti's northern plains. Each year the Great Migration involves over 1.4 million wildebeest, almost 300,000 Thomson's gazelles and about 200,000 zebras. With around 3 million larger mammals — including about 3,000 lions, some 300 cheetahs and an estimated 400–700 leopards — this is the richest wildlife park in the world.
A full day in the quieter north, where you can wait at river crossings and enjoy sightings with few other vehicles around.
The entire day is dedicated to game viewing in the Serengeti. The areas you visit depend on where the migrating herds are. Predators usually follow closely behind the trekking animals and include lions, leopards (in the acacia trees) and cheetahs. During the short rains of November and December the herds move from the hills in the north to the plains in the south.
Another full day of game viewing. The route follows the herds: during the short rains in November and December they move from the hills in the north to the plains in the south.
You descend over 600 metres into the crater to view wildlife. Supported by a year-round supply of water and fodder, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area supports a vast variety of animals, including herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo and giant African elephants. The dense predator population includes lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the elusive leopard. You also visit Lake Magadi, a large but shallow alkaline lake in the south-western corner, home to flamingos, hippos and water birds.
Giant baobab trees, bush savannah and seasonal marshes characterise this nature reserve. Tarangire is considered one of the best places to see elephants up close, and the park is also home to buffaloes, zebras and wildebeests, followed by predators such as lions; leopards are seen occasionally. From the open roof of your safari vehicle you take in the landscape and watch the animals. Game drive until the late afternoon, then transfer back to Arusha/JRO.
