As a newer route, Lemosho is more remote and arguably more beautiful, but a bit longer and slightly more expensive. It starts at Londorossi Gate on the western side, crosses the Shira Plateau, joins the Machame route and descends via the Southern Circuit through the Barranco Valley. You may see buffalo and elephant. Because this route can be done over a longer period, allowing better acclimatisation, it has a higher summit success rate.
Depart Arusha (4 hours) for Londorossi Gate, then drive to the trailhead (1 hour). After lunch, trek through undisturbed forest to the first camp.
Leave the forest for savannah with tall grasses, heather and volcanic rock. Climb through rolling hills, cross streams and reach the Shira Ridge, then descend to Shira 1 with views of Kibo.
Explore the Shira Plateau — one of the highest plateaus on earth — with a gentle walk east towards Kibo's glaciered peak, continuing to Moir Hut at the foot of the Lent Hills.
Continue east up a ridge, then south-east towards the Lava Tower (“Shark's Tooth”). Pass the Arrow Glacier and descend to Barranco. This day is very important for acclimatisation.
Leave Barranco, climb the Barranco Wall and continue to the Karanga Valley — a short acclimatisation day.
Leave Karanga, reach the junction with the Mweka Trail and climb to Barafu Hut, completing the Southern Circuit with views of Mawenzi and Kibo.
Depart between midnight and 2 a.m. and climb between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers through heavy scree to Stella Point on the crater rim — the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. Watch the sunrise, then continue about an hour to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Descend via Barafu for lunch and on to Mweka Camp.
Descend to Mweka Park Gate to collect your summit certificates. At lower elevations it can be wet and muddy; shorts and a T-shirt are usually enough, but keep rain gear handy. A vehicle takes you back to your hotel in Moshi.
