Cette section est en anglais. Un site réel peut ajouter des traductions complètes.
The second most popular and one of the most beautiful routes up the mountain. Also known as the Whisky Route, this trail is both longer and slightly more challenging than the Marangu Route. Accommodation is in tents only. About 80% of hikers reach the summit.

Programme jour par jour
-
Jour 1Machame Gate to Machame Camp
The drive from Moshi takes 45 minutes through Machame village on the lower slopes. Trek through rainforest on a winding ridge trail; the lower sections can be muddy and slippery, so gaiters and poles are recommended.
-
Jour 2Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Leave the rainforest and climb through a little valley along a steep, rocky ridge covered with heather, then turn west into a river gorge for rest, dinner and the night.
-
Jour 3Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
Continue east up a ridge, pass the Kibo junction and head south-east to the Lava Tower (“Shark's Tooth”) near the Arrow Glacier, then descend to Barranco. A critical acclimatisation day.
-
Jour 4Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Climb the steep Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley, where the trail meets the Mweka route.
-
Jour 5Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Continue up to Barafu Camp, completing the Southern Circuit with views of the summit from many angles. Rest and prepare for summit night.
-
Jour 6Barafu Camp – Summit – Mweka Camp
Depart between midnight and 2 a.m. and climb between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers through heavy scree to Stella Point on the crater rim — the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. Watch the sunrise, then continue about an hour to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Descend via Barafu for lunch and on to Mweka Camp.
-
Jour 7Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Descend to Mweka Park Gate to collect your summit certificates. At lower elevations it can be wet and muddy; shorts and a T-shirt are usually enough, but keep rain gear handy. A vehicle takes you back to your hotel in Moshi.
