You leave Arusha for the Ngorongoro Crater and descend about 600 metres on partly adventurous roads into this geological wonder. The crater spans 17–21 kilometres and holds almost the whole range of East African savannah wildlife. Between 15,000 and 25,000 animals live here depending on the season — buffaloes, wildebeest, zebras and gazelles make up two-thirds — and it has the densest concentration of predators in Africa, including more than 100 lions in several prides.
