Over a million wildebeest, hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, and the predators that follow them — where the herds are through the year and how to see them.

Every year more than 1.4 million wildebeest, around 200,000 zebras and hundreds of thousands of gazelles move in a great circle through the Serengeti ecosystem, following the rains and fresh grass. Lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas are never far behind.

Where are the herds?

  • December to March: southern Serengeti and Ndutu — calving season, with thousands of births every day.
  • April to June: the herds move north-west through the central Serengeti.
  • July to October: northern Serengeti — the famous Mara River crossings.
  • November: the herds return south with the short rains.

Seeing it with Safari360

Nature does not follow a timetable, so the herds can be early or late. Our guides stay in touch with each other every day and plan your game drives around the latest sightings. Our Grand Migration safaris spend extra time in the Serengeti, so you can wait at the best spots instead of rushing.

Ask us which part of the Serengeti suits your travel dates, and we will build the trip around it.
