In seven days you visit all the major safari national parks in the north of Tanzania. This tour awaits with extensive game drives, especially in the Serengeti, with plenty of time for animal watching and the chance to shoot many great photos. You are at the centre of attention and are invited to help us shape the daily schedule of your safari.
After a briefing and a two-hour drive you arrive at Tarangire. Giant baobab trees, bush savannah and seasonal marshes characterise this nature reserve. Tarangire is considered one of the best places to see elephants up close, and the park is also home to buffaloes, zebras and wildebeests, followed by predators such as lions; leopards are seen occasionally. From the open roof of your safari vehicle you take in the landscape and watch the animals. Evening drive to the lodge.
Experience the Serengeti's iconic wildlife: leopards and cheetahs hunting, elephant families, the roar of lions and huge herds of buffalo, zebra and wildebeest flowing across the plains like rivers.
The entire day is dedicated to game viewing in the Serengeti. The areas you visit depend on where the migrating herds are. Predators usually follow closely behind the trekking animals and include lions, leopards (in the acacia trees) and cheetahs. During the short rains of November and December the herds move from the hills in the north to the plains in the south.
Enjoy some more game viewing before leaving the Serengeti National Park at around noon for the Ndutu area. This region features cool-climate forests with views of craters and cliffs, and wildlife such as forest elephants, buffaloes and — if you are lucky — leopards.
You descend over 600 metres into the crater to view wildlife. Supported by a year-round supply of water and fodder, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area supports a vast variety of animals, including herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo and giant African elephants. The dense predator population includes lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the elusive leopard. You also visit Lake Magadi, a large but shallow alkaline lake in the south-western corner, home to flamingos, hippos and water birds. Picnic lunch included.
The park is dominated by the lake of the same name, which attracts large colonies of water birds — particularly impressive are the pink flamingos, cormorants, pelicans and storks. About 400 bird species live in the park. Lake Manyara is also famous for its tree-climbing lions, and you can see elephants, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes and hippos. In the afternoon you return to the lodge.
Discover the traditional life of the Maasai, their culture and traditions, and visit their bomas (a group of huts belonging to an extended family). On arrival at the village expect a traditional welcome, with plenty of singing and dancing — participation is very much encouraged! Learn about fire-making and beadwork, meet the villagers and buy handmade leather and beadwork, then return to Arusha/JRO.
