Route Overview
The 6 Days Kilimanjaro Machame Route is the second most popular and indeed one of the most beautiful routes up the mountain is the Machame Route. Also known as the Whisky Route, this trail is both longer and slightly more challenging than the Marangu Route. Where accommodation on the Marangu route is in huts, the Machame route offers strictly tents only.
The route is better suited to the slightly more adventurous hiker; however, it rewards him with a scenic splendor such is not seen on the Marangu route. With it’s challenge, about 80% of hikers make it to the Africa’s summit.
Trek Itinerary
DAY 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
The drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 45 minutes. The journeys pass through the village of Machame, which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain.
We now leave the park gate and walk through the rainforest on a winding trail up a ridge. Lower down, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue for a short distance until we reach the Machame Camp.
- Elevation: 1830m to 3000m, 6000ft to 10,200ft
- Distance: 11km
- Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
- Vegetation: Montane Forest
DAY 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
After breakfast, we leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the little valley, walking along a steep rocky ridge, covered with heather, until the ridge ends. The route now turns west onto a river gorge. Time for rest, dinner, and overnight at the Shira campsite.
- Elevation: 3000m to 3840m, 10,200ft to 12,600ft
- Distance: 5km
- Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
- Vegetation: Moorland
DAY 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
From the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the Southeast towards the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth.” Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction, which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 4876m / 15,997 ft. We now continue down to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 3860m / 12,664 ft. Here we rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight. Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.
- Elevation: 3800m to 4630m to 3986m, 15,000ft to 13,700ft
- Distance: 11 km
- Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
- Vegetation: Semi-desert
DAY 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge up the Barranco Wall, through the Karanga Valley (lunch at 4200m / 13,779 ft), and the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the Barafu Hut. You have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position.
- Elevation: 3900m to 4600m, 13,007ft to 15,295ft
- Distance: 9km
- Hiking Time: 8 hours
- Vegetation: Alpine Desert
DAY 5: Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp
Very early in the morning (midnight to 2 am), we continue our way to the summit. You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point (5685m / 18,652 ft), you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting).
From Stella Point, you will encounter snow all the way on your 2-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, we have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Faster hikers will see the sunrise from the summit.
It can be very cold at night at these elevations, but it will be quite warm by the end of the hiking day. You will want clothing for both extremes with you.
From the summit, we now make our descent, continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You will want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon.
Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep. Beer and soda may be available for purchase at the Mweka Hut — the only location on this route.
- Elevation: 4600m to 5895m (and down to 3100m) | 15,100ft to 19,300ft (and down to 10,200ft)
- Distance: 5km ascent / 12km descent
- Hiking Time: 6-8 hours ascent / 3 hours descent
- Vegetation: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
DAY 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). A vehicle will meet you at Mweka gate to drive you back to the hotel in Moshi.
- Elevation: 3100m to 1830m, 10,200ft to 6000ft
- Distance: 10 km
- Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
- Vegetation: Forest

What Our Guests Say
EXCELLENT Based on 127 reviews Posted on Nicolas BVerified Exceptional 6-Day Safari Experience with Safari 360 Safari 360 was a great 6 days. Guide Amos is remarkable - knows in detail about each animal and takes it to the right place. I have seen the migration in Serengeti, the Black Rhino in Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara from close quarters. Accommodations were clean, comfortable, and the food was excellent. It felt very personal because it was a small group.Everything went smoothly, no problems. I would go with them again. Highly recommended.Posted on Rikke HVerified 10/10! Without a doubt the best safari we've ever been to! In just 6 days we saw ALL the five big ones – including not one, but TRE different leopard observations and a nasal horn with its little baby at Ngorongoro. Our guide, Emmanuel, was a pure legend; his eyes are like eagle eyes, he saw lions miles away and knew exactly where the animals would be. The lodges were fantastic (especially the one on the crater edge – to wake up to that view is unreal). The food was delicious, the vehicle was comfortable, everything was perfectly organized. Worth every penny. Planning already to come back with the kids!Posted on Jelle VVerified A Once-in-a-Lifetime Safari with Safari360 and Bakari! Our safari experience in Tanzania with Safari360 was nothing short of extraordinary! From start to finish, everything was impeccably organized, and the entire journey far exceeded our expectations.A huge part of what made this trip unforgettable was our incredible driver and guide, Bakari. His knowledge of the wildlife, landscapes, and parks was unmatched, and his sharp eye for spotting animals was unbelievable. Thanks to him, we didn’t just see the Big Five—we also witnessed a cheetah with her cubs, a black rhino with its young, and countless other animals. Honestly, we can’t think of a single creature we didn’t see during our time in Tanzania!Bakari’s professionalism, warmth, and passion for wildlife made every moment special. He always positioned us perfectly for photos, answered every question with enthusiasm, and ensured we felt safe, comfortable, and amazed every step of the way.If you’re considering a safari in Tanzania, we can’t recommend Safari360 and Bakari highly enough. This was truly the trip of a lifetime, and we’re already dreaming about coming back!Posted on Zander FVerified A Journey Beyond Expectations We've got Safari 360 in our safe hands from day one. Petro arranged everything for us in such a way that the whole trip could be enjoyed without any stress. From start to finish, everything was perfect - the planning, the communication, the hotel booking, even the small details. Our guide was Iddy - a man of calm, experienced and incredibly patient. In every park from Tarangire to Serengeti, he seems to have opened our eyes. A lion resting under a tree, a herd of elephants at the water's edge, or a cheetah hiding in a faraway bush - he would find them as if the animals themselves were waiting for him.Iddie wasn't just a guide, she was a wonderful storyteller. He talked about the life cycle, habits and environment of every animal in such a way that we learn something new every day.The camps were also great - clean, comfortable and in the midst of nature. Sleeping outside the tent on the night of Serengeti, listening to the lion's call - I will never forget it.Safari360 has truly given us the experience of a lifetime.Posted on Nina KVerified POOR RELIABILITY Our safari was full of beautiful sights and incredible memories, BUT it was also overshadowed by the POOR reliability of Safari 360’s vehicles. The only reason we managed to enjoy the experience at all was thanks to our driver and guide who was absolutely outstanding. He was knowledgeable, kind, funny, and always gave 110% to keep us safe and comfortable.Unfortunately, the vehicle broke down three separate times during our trip. The first breakdown happened just outside a Maasai village, and our guide impressively managed to fix it on his own. The second was as we left Serengeti. The third and worst breakdown happened in the middle of nowhere, on the road through the jungle to our accommodation. We were completely stranded until the next morning, when the company finally sent another vehicle. Despite the major disruption to our itinerary, Safari 360 denied any refund or compensation, which was extremely disappointing and unprofessional. To be clear: our guide did everything humanly possible in all three situations. His quick thinking, calm approach, and commitment to his guests were remarkable, and he deserves the highest praise. But as much as we appreciate him, the company itself failed us. Safari 360 seriously needs to maintain their vehicles properly and take responsibility for their clients’ experiences.Posted on Eira NVerified Family Trip Experience With our family, we took a 10-day trip to Tanzania with Safari360. All in all it was a great trip from start to finish. Seeing elephants and giraffes in Tarangire, lions climbing trees in Lake Manyara - everything was real like watching a documentary.Seeing the Great Migration of the Serengeti was the most beautiful moment of the trip. Our guide was very friendly, smiling and learning new things every day.Posted on Nimrah BVerified 6 day Safari with Safari 360 We booked our 6 day Safari with Petro who was very helpful and changed the plan for what we wanted. We had the best driver/guide Bakari who became one of us after 6 days together. He was very patient to the kids (13,13,9) and stayed calm when they were crazy . Every day was special and we saw new sights. They booked us very nice lodges and everything was much more than we expected. Even when the car was needed to take care of we enjoyed a nice visit at a local market. I highly recommend using their service and I definitely will when we come back again.Posted on Maps646398Verified Unique experience It was a wonderful experience, they met all our requests, from the modification of some stages to a guide who spoke Italian. The driver was very experienced and knowledgeable. On the last day we had booked the hotel in Arusha near the airport on our own as the next early morning we had the flight to zanzibar, the guides accompanied us to the reception and made sure everything was ok before leaving us. We felt pampered from arrival to departure. The beautiful accommodations and the seven-seater jeep all to ourselves were the icing on the cake!I recommend living this unique adventure with 360 safaris, thank you for giving us unforgettable moments!Posted on Emiel SmitVerified Excellent guide and amazing parks I went on a 4 day trip with my friends. Safari360 had everything planned right from the start - the pick-up from the airport, the accommodation, the food and the daily safari were all smooth. Our guide was very patient and very good at spotting wildlife. I saw lions and leopards in Serengeti, elephants in Tarangire, and rhinoceros and deer in Ngorongoro Crater. Each day was a new experience. The cuisine was superb and the accommodations were pleasant and clean. The entire vacation exceeded expectations. This is an excellent package for those who want to see the nature and fauna of Tanzania up close.Posted on Manembo RVerified A journey full of experiences We visited Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater during this 6-day safari.
