Route Overview
The Northern Circuit route is one of the best routes on Kilimanjaro, offering nearly 360 degrees of beautiful scenery including the quiet, rarely visited northern slopes. As the longest route on Kilimanjaro, the Northern Circuit allows for the best acclimatization time and the highest summit success rate, therefore this route is highly recommended.
The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west, beginning with a long drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. From there, the first two days are spent trekking through the rainforest to Shira Ridge, before crossing the Shira Plateau. The route then heads north and circles clockwise from Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp to School Hut, before summiting from the east.
Trek Itinerary
DAY 1: Londorossi Gate to Big Tree Camp
The Northern Circuit Route begins at Londorossi Gate (2,100 meters) in the West, the same start point as the Lemosho Route. The drive to Londorossi Gate takes approximately two hours from Moshi and considerably longer from Arusha. Registration with the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities occurs at the gate and then you will be driven further up the mountain to the trailhead starting point. Most tour operators serve lunch here before the short first day trek to MtiMkubwa Camp (2,820 meters) begins. You may get lucky and spot large wildlife like elephant and buffalo that sometimes emerge from the rainforest onto the path as you trek towards your first camp. Dinner will be served when you reach Big Tree Camp.
- Elevation: 2100meters to 2800meters
- Distance: 6 km
- Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
- Habitat: Rain Forest
DAY 2: Big Tree Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Our trekking continues after breakfast, following the trail leading out of the forest and into the heather zone. The land here looks like a savanna grassland with amazing view of heather bushes growing next to each other to resist the cold weather, making the perfect spot for picnic lunch. The trek gets steeper as we approach the Shira ridge before descend to Shira 1 camp. Magnificent view of Kibo across the Shira plateau will blow your mind.
- Elevation: 2800meters to 3500meters
- Distance: 8 km
- Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
- Habitat: Moorland
DAY 3: Shira 1 to Shira 2 Campsite
Our route continues toward Shira 2 campsite after breakfast. We will use this day to explore the Shira plateau, a great exercise to help your acclimatization, as we take easy walk facing Kibo from the east across the plateau, toward Shira 2 campsite . Hot lunch will be served once we reach the camp. You will have another acclimatization walk later in the afternoon to prepare you for the summit attempt.
- Elevation: 3500meters to 3900meters
- Distance: 7 km
- Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
- Habitat: Moorland
DAY 4: Shira Campsite 2 to Moir Campsite
Today is a long trek heading east which passes through the ‘Garden of the Senecios’ and then enters the high alpine desert zone. The morning is spent trekking up to Lava Tower and the iconic Shark’s Tooth rock formation at 4,600 meters, where you will have lunch. After lunch you will join the northern circuit heading down to Moir Camp at 4,200 meters. This is an important day in your trek as you will get to experience high altitude and then sleep low, which is good for the acclimatization process.
- Elevation: 3900meters to 4200meters
- Distance: 14 km
- Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
- Habitat: Alpine desert
DAY 5: Moir Campsite to Buffalo Campsite
This day involves a moderately steep climb out of Moir Valley. Trekkers can take a small detour here to climb the summit of Little Lent Hill at 4,375 meters before returning to the Northern Circuit trail. From here the route follows a series of inclines and declines, skirting around the northern slopes of Kibo to Buffalo Camp (4,020 meters). The trek gives great vistas out across the plains that lie north of Kilimanjaro and stretch out to the Kenyan / Tanzanian border. You will arrive at Buffalo Camp just after midday, where you will have lunch and have time to rest after a long day hiking.
- Elevation: 4200meters to 4020meters
- Distance: 12 km
- Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
- Habitat: Alpine desert
DAY 6: Buffalo Campsite to Rongai Third Cave
The day starts with a climb up the Buffalo ridge and down into Porfu Camp where lunch is usually served. The route then continues east around the northern slopes to the Rongai Third Cave at 3,800 meters. The trek is shorter than the day before and by now you should be feeling well acclimatised to the altitude. You will arrive at the Third Cave just around mid-afternoon.
- Elevation: 4020meters to 3800meters
- Distance: 8 km
- Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
- Habitat: Alpine desert
DAY 7: Third Cave to School Hut Campsite
The hike today involves a steady incline up and over the Saddle which sits between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi Peak. Trekkers then continue walking south-west up to School Hut (4,800 meters). After arriving at School Hut you will be served an early dinner and then you should get some shut-eye as you will be awoken before midnight to start your summit attempt. Remember to prepare all your gear, including warm clothes, insulated water bottles, snacks, headlamp and camera before going to bed.
- Elevation: 3800 meters to 4800meters
- Distance: 15 km
- Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
- Habitat: Alpine desert
DAY 8: School Hut to Uhuru Peak and then onto Millennium Campsite
You will be awoken around 11:30 with hot tea and biscuits and will then begin the steep incline up the slopes of Kibo under the cover of darkness. Your first check-point is Hans Meyer Cave where you will take a short break. The climb steepens as you approach Gilman’s Point (5,681 meters), which will be around 5-6 hours after departing School Hut. Take a moment to enjoy the approaching dawn and incredible view out and across to Mawenzi Peak, but remember you still have 2 hours trekking to reach Uhuru Peak so dig deep for the energy.
Most trekkers take a short break here before continuing down to Millennium Camp (3,950 meters) for your final night on the mountain. In total you will be trekking for 14-16 hours on day eight so it is important to pace yourself, remain hydrated and keep your blood sugar levels up.
- Elevation: 4800meters to 5895 meters to 3950 meters
- Distance: 6km ascent and 10.5 km descent
- Hiking Time: 6-8 hours ascent and 4-5 hours descent
- Habitat: Arctic to Alpine desert
DAY 7: Millennium Campsite to Mweka Gate
The final day is a short hike through the dense montane rainforest from Millennium Camp (3,950 meters) to Mweka Gate (1,640 meters). At the gate you will need to sign-out with the authorities, who will also provide you with your official certificate – a green certificate for those who made it to Gilman’s Point and a gold certificate for those who reached Uhuru Peak. It is customary to give your guide and porter tips before being driven back to your hotel in Moshi.
- Elevation: 3850meters to 1800meters
- Distance: 10km
- Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
- Habitat: Rain forest

What Our Guests Say
EXCELLENT Based on 127 reviews Posted on Nicolas BVerified Exceptional 6-Day Safari Experience with Safari 360 Safari 360 was a great 6 days. Guide Amos is remarkable - knows in detail about each animal and takes it to the right place. I have seen the migration in Serengeti, the Black Rhino in Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara from close quarters. Accommodations were clean, comfortable, and the food was excellent. It felt very personal because it was a small group.Everything went smoothly, no problems. I would go with them again. Highly recommended.Posted on Rikke HVerified 10/10! Without a doubt the best safari we've ever been to! In just 6 days we saw ALL the five big ones – including not one, but TRE different leopard observations and a nasal horn with its little baby at Ngorongoro. Our guide, Emmanuel, was a pure legend; his eyes are like eagle eyes, he saw lions miles away and knew exactly where the animals would be. The lodges were fantastic (especially the one on the crater edge – to wake up to that view is unreal). The food was delicious, the vehicle was comfortable, everything was perfectly organized. Worth every penny. Planning already to come back with the kids!Posted on Jelle VVerified A Once-in-a-Lifetime Safari with Safari360 and Bakari! Our safari experience in Tanzania with Safari360 was nothing short of extraordinary! From start to finish, everything was impeccably organized, and the entire journey far exceeded our expectations.A huge part of what made this trip unforgettable was our incredible driver and guide, Bakari. His knowledge of the wildlife, landscapes, and parks was unmatched, and his sharp eye for spotting animals was unbelievable. Thanks to him, we didn’t just see the Big Five—we also witnessed a cheetah with her cubs, a black rhino with its young, and countless other animals. Honestly, we can’t think of a single creature we didn’t see during our time in Tanzania!Bakari’s professionalism, warmth, and passion for wildlife made every moment special. He always positioned us perfectly for photos, answered every question with enthusiasm, and ensured we felt safe, comfortable, and amazed every step of the way.If you’re considering a safari in Tanzania, we can’t recommend Safari360 and Bakari highly enough. This was truly the trip of a lifetime, and we’re already dreaming about coming back!Posted on Zander FVerified A Journey Beyond Expectations We've got Safari 360 in our safe hands from day one. Petro arranged everything for us in such a way that the whole trip could be enjoyed without any stress. From start to finish, everything was perfect - the planning, the communication, the hotel booking, even the small details. Our guide was Iddy - a man of calm, experienced and incredibly patient. In every park from Tarangire to Serengeti, he seems to have opened our eyes. A lion resting under a tree, a herd of elephants at the water's edge, or a cheetah hiding in a faraway bush - he would find them as if the animals themselves were waiting for him.Iddie wasn't just a guide, she was a wonderful storyteller. He talked about the life cycle, habits and environment of every animal in such a way that we learn something new every day.The camps were also great - clean, comfortable and in the midst of nature. Sleeping outside the tent on the night of Serengeti, listening to the lion's call - I will never forget it.Safari360 has truly given us the experience of a lifetime.Posted on Nina KVerified POOR RELIABILITY Our safari was full of beautiful sights and incredible memories, BUT it was also overshadowed by the POOR reliability of Safari 360’s vehicles. The only reason we managed to enjoy the experience at all was thanks to our driver and guide who was absolutely outstanding. He was knowledgeable, kind, funny, and always gave 110% to keep us safe and comfortable.Unfortunately, the vehicle broke down three separate times during our trip. The first breakdown happened just outside a Maasai village, and our guide impressively managed to fix it on his own. The second was as we left Serengeti. The third and worst breakdown happened in the middle of nowhere, on the road through the jungle to our accommodation. We were completely stranded until the next morning, when the company finally sent another vehicle. Despite the major disruption to our itinerary, Safari 360 denied any refund or compensation, which was extremely disappointing and unprofessional. To be clear: our guide did everything humanly possible in all three situations. His quick thinking, calm approach, and commitment to his guests were remarkable, and he deserves the highest praise. But as much as we appreciate him, the company itself failed us. Safari 360 seriously needs to maintain their vehicles properly and take responsibility for their clients’ experiences.Posted on Eira NVerified Family Trip Experience With our family, we took a 10-day trip to Tanzania with Safari360. All in all it was a great trip from start to finish. Seeing elephants and giraffes in Tarangire, lions climbing trees in Lake Manyara - everything was real like watching a documentary.Seeing the Great Migration of the Serengeti was the most beautiful moment of the trip. Our guide was very friendly, smiling and learning new things every day.Posted on Nimrah BVerified 6 day Safari with Safari 360 We booked our 6 day Safari with Petro who was very helpful and changed the plan for what we wanted. We had the best driver/guide Bakari who became one of us after 6 days together. He was very patient to the kids (13,13,9) and stayed calm when they were crazy . Every day was special and we saw new sights. They booked us very nice lodges and everything was much more than we expected. Even when the car was needed to take care of we enjoyed a nice visit at a local market. I highly recommend using their service and I definitely will when we come back again.Posted on Maps646398Verified Unique experience It was a wonderful experience, they met all our requests, from the modification of some stages to a guide who spoke Italian. The driver was very experienced and knowledgeable. On the last day we had booked the hotel in Arusha near the airport on our own as the next early morning we had the flight to zanzibar, the guides accompanied us to the reception and made sure everything was ok before leaving us. We felt pampered from arrival to departure. The beautiful accommodations and the seven-seater jeep all to ourselves were the icing on the cake!I recommend living this unique adventure with 360 safaris, thank you for giving us unforgettable moments!Posted on Emiel SmitVerified Excellent guide and amazing parks I went on a 4 day trip with my friends. Safari360 had everything planned right from the start - the pick-up from the airport, the accommodation, the food and the daily safari were all smooth. Our guide was very patient and very good at spotting wildlife. I saw lions and leopards in Serengeti, elephants in Tarangire, and rhinoceros and deer in Ngorongoro Crater. Each day was a new experience. The cuisine was superb and the accommodations were pleasant and clean. The entire vacation exceeded expectations. This is an excellent package for those who want to see the nature and fauna of Tanzania up close.Posted on Manembo RVerified A journey full of experiences We visited Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater during this 6-day safari.
